The KNOWLYMPICS 2023 Winners

Published: February 29, 2024

Learning and sharing is at the heart of our Knowledge Management Programme and the Experience Capitalisation Process forms its foundation. To incentivise the process, we have created the KNOWLYMPICS – our Knowledge Sharing Games!

The 7th KNOWLYMPICS had a special focus on Women’s Rights –  it was a huge success! 19 organisations from 9 different countries shared 23 highly valuable experiences. This is far more than in previous years: we received eight experiences in 2022 and ten in 2021. The importance of women’s rights is clearly being recognised in a wide range of projects.

This year, one particular topic ran like a common thread through many organisations in all regions: creating networks and local groups to strengthen women’s self-organisation and resilience. Some of these networks are exchanging and enhancing knowledge and capabilities about feminism, GBV, and women’s rights (UWONET, LeMuSiCa, Jossoal, Mill Hill Kotido, FCS, SFL, Esmabama, Groots), others focus more on economic empowerment (Rescue Dada, Fundatierra, Fundesyram, FCS). All of these shared experiences reveal a valuable pool of know-how and a variety of approaches to building durable and self-sustaining networks.

The same could be said about enhancing leadership of women in agriculture, which was another prominent topic (AFIRD, FSM, Groots, Esmabama, Caritas Gulu).

While also being a concern for many organisations, two of them explicitly depicted their experience of working with of men and boys to create a more gender equitable society (YARD and Jossoal).

And a big shout-out to Fundación Segundo Montes, they submitted the only Learning from Failure experience this year. Don’t be shy and do it like FSM – we all make mistakes and we can all learn from them!

The participating organisations shared their experiences and promoted a learning process within their organisations. Using our questionnaires to systematically document experiences, they trigger a process of reflection and answer questions such as what has worked, what hasn’t, and – most importantly – why. This is where learning begins and this is what we want to draw on.

By creating accessible one-page presentations of the experiences (At-a-Glance documents) we try to make knowledge palatable, motivating more people to engage with it. As soon as our new horiont3000 website is online, you will find the At-a-Glance presentations of all submitted experiences there. Once available, we will let you know and make sure you don’t miss any of the important lessons!

In this regard, we are taking a new approach this year: In addition to awarding prizes, we want to provide the three winning organizations with the opportunity to delve deeper into their experiences together with all interested parties. To facilitate this knowledge sharing and networking we will organise three online sessions, in English, Spanish, and Portuguese respectively. We will inform you of the details in the upcoming weeks.

For drawing this year’s winners we were honoured to receive backup from our dear colleague Elfi Paller before starting a new life chapter in a couple of months: well deserved retirement. So after having been with horizont3000 since its early years, we took the occasion and asked her to draw the winners of our KNOWLYMPICS 2023!

Process: To ensure that all regions were equally represented, we made three pots, from which we drew three winners at random. From these three winners, we then drew the first place.
